The Directorate General for Mobility, through the corresponding interurban public transport bodies, has agreed to extend the period of suspension of access for electric scooters, electric bicycles and other electric personal mobility vehicles (PMVs) on TIB network services (bus, train and metro).
The Majorcan Transport Consortium (CTM) and Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) have agreed at their respective board meetings to extend the measure that came into force on 1 December for an initial period of six months. The two entities have agreed to maintain the ban as of 1 June, as the risk to user safety from fires caused by PMVs remains. This measure does not affect access by wheelchairs and vehicles for persons with reduced mobility, which are excluded from the definition of PMVs in the state regulation.
The agreements provide for the suspension of access to electric PMVs on interurban bus services, trains and the metro. To avoid the risk of fire or explosion at SFM's facilities, where the busiest are underground, extending the ban on PMV access to its facilities, as well as at the Palma Intermodal station, has also been considered.
This measure, which has also been implemented in public transport networks in cities such as Palma, Madrid and Barcelona, was decided following fires caused by explosions in the batteries of this type of vehicle in the Madrid metro and the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
In recent months more bicycle racks have been made available at some stations to encourage intermodality in the use of public transport. Part Forana users who come to Palma can also use the Mou-te bé public bicycle service.
