The Govern formalises a contract for the installation of new escalators at Palma Intermodal station

The Government of the Balearic Islands has formalised a contract for the installation of new escalators at Palma Intermodal station. It will be the first time that the escalators at the main station of the TIB network, in operation for nearly 20 years since their installation in 2007, have been renovated. This action is part of the various improvements initiated by the Majorcan Transport Consortium (CTM) at the Intermodal station, such as new bus dock ventilation, starting this summer, and the forthcoming refurbishment of the toilets, among others.

Put out to tender last June, this contract includes the replacement and maintenance of escalators and involves an investment of more than 1.1 million euros. CTM has this week formalised the contract for the installation of the six new escalators —four at the main entrance to the station and two to access the TIB bus docks— with assembly scheduled to begin in November and progressive commissioning during the first and second quarters of 2026.

In accordance with this plan, the contractor will start in November with the installation of two of the six escalators, leaving one up and one down in operation at all times to preserve accessibility and cause as little inconvenience as possible to users. The six escalators will be replaced in two phases: in the first phase, in the first quarter of 2026, three are to be installed, and the remaining three in a second phase, in the second quarter of the year.

There are currently six escalators, which have been operating since 2007 and have not yet been renovated. For more than ten years, the escalators of the main entrance were exposed to the weather, a fact that spoiled their condition and which was addressed with the installation of the pergola in 2018. Even so, in recent years the escalators have suffered many breakdowns, which has caused inconvenience to users and led to this new contract.

The contract for replacing the six escalators has been awarded to TK Elevadoras España SLU, in accordance with the bid submitted, for a sum of 1,138,252.80 euros (VAT excluded), and a duration of three years and nine months, with no possibility of extension. This is one of the improvement investments promoted by the Government at Palma Intermodal station.

The Majorcan Transport Consortium is working to improve the Intermodal station with different actions planned for the coming months, in addition to the new escalators, such as changing the main access doors to the station, improving the tactile paving, refurbishing the public toilets and the user information and customer service office. The first effective action has been the installation of six new industrial fans in the bus terminal of the TIB network, which have improved the ventilation of the docks since this summer.

All these actions are financed by the Insularity Factor set out in the Special Regime for the Balearic Islands for a total amount of approximately 2.5 million euros. The Govern continues to work to improve the infrastructure of interurban public transport in Majorca with the aim of guaranteeing a quality and safe service for all users.
