The Government and Palma City Council present the Single Public Transport Card for the whole island of Majorca

The Government and Palma City Council present the Single Public Transport Card for the whole island of Majorca

Users of the Palma Citizen Card who do not have an Intermodal Card can apply for the Single Card as of October

Those who already have an Intermodal Card do not have to apply for the new card, as the Intermodal already works as a Single Card

The Palma Citizen Card will cease to function as a transport ticket on EMT buses at the end of the first quarter of 2026

The Govern de les Illes Balears (Government of the Balearic Islands) and Palma City Council have presented the Single Card, with which users can travel on all public transport in Majorca: train, metro, inter-city bus (TIB network) and Palma city bus (EMT). Users of the Palma Citizen Card and those that don’t have an Intermodal Card (TIB) will be able to apply for the new card from next October.

The Minister for Housing, Territory and Mobility of the Government of Majorca, José Luis Mateo, and the Deputy Mayor for Mobility of Palma City Council, Antonio Deudero, have reported the start of this transition period for the implementation of the Single Card, an improvement aimed at providing all users with a faster and more convenient way to use any means of public transport on the island of Majorca with the same card.

In this regard, in addition to facilitating the use of different means of public transport with a single ticket, the Single Card, it is worth highlighting among the improvements that ticket payment by bank card on EMT buses will be enabled, as is already possible on the train, metro and TIB buses. This measure is aimed at non-regular users, such as non-residents or those who do not have an intermodal card or the Palma Citizen Card.

Transition phase: from the Citizen's Card to the Single Card

The implementation of the Single Card is the result of the collaboration agreement signed in November last year by the Government and the City Council for the technological and fare integration of the services of the TIB (train, metro and intercity bus) and EMT de Palma (city bus) networks, which also makes progress in technological improvement and coordination between administrations.

The implementation of the new Single Card will begin in October of this year with the start of a six-month transition phase with the current Palma Citizen Card. During this transition period, users will be able to continue to travel on the EMT bus network with the Citizen Card. This will make it easier for all users who do not currently have the Intermodal Card to obtain the Single Card and thus benefit from this ticket to travel on the entire public transport network of Majorca.

These users will be able to apply for and obtain the Single Card free of charge from next October. Users who already hold an Intermodal Card do not need to apply for it and need to keep their card to travel on the TIB - EMT network (train, metro, intercity and urban bus). On the other hand, those who use the Palma Citizen Card and do not have an Intermodal Card will have to apply for the Single Card to travel on public transport, both on the TIB network and with the EMT.

The Palma Citizen Card will cease to function as a transport ticket at the end of the first quarter of 2026, although it will continue to have other uses. Specifically, it will serve as an identifier for Palma residents to obtain free of charge, via the Internet, the residence certificate for travel and for features related to good practices in waste management, such as the opening of brown containers for organic matter. Thus, the transition stage between the two cards will begin from October, when it will be possible to apply for the Single Card.

At the same time, progress is being made towards digitalisation, as the Majorca Transport Consortium is working on the launch of a virtual Single Card for mobile devices, which is expected to be implemented during the first half of 2026 throughout the TIB network (intercity bus, train and metro) and on Palma's EMT buses. There are currently almost 570,000 citizens living in Majorca who have the Intermodal Card (TIB), of which more than 230,000 (41%) are residents of Palma. With this integration, users will have more physical points to obtain the new Single Card, both for the first issue and for future requests for duplicates. Initially, it will be available at all the usual card issuing points in the TIB network in different towns of Majorca and at the EMT in Palma.

It can be requested at any of the TIB user service points: at the Palma Intermodal Station and at the Alcúdia, Inca and Manacor offices, as well as at the municipal offices of the town councils of Calvià, Llucmajor and Marratxí. It can also be requested at the EMT Customer Service Office in Palma and at the Citizen Service Offices (OAC, Oficinas de Atención a la Ciudadanía).

Since the agreement reached last year, TIB and EMT have formed the large integrated public transport network in Majorca. This historic milestone enables the sharing of strategies and a global vision for the improvement of public transport and mobility on the island of Majorca.

"The Government and the City Council are working together continuously to improve public transport, to make it a real alternative to the use of private vehicles and to help reduce traffic congestion in the city and on the roads," said the councillor José Luis Mateo at the press conference, which was also attended by the Managing Director for Mobility, Lorena del Valle. For his part, the Deputy Mayor for Mobility of Palma, Antonio Deudero, remarked that with this measure, "users will be able to pay by card, a commitment of this government team".

"The integration is a very important step forward for the citizens of Palma, as it will make it possible to have a single, more practical and functional card for travelling on public transport," added the councillor, who also stressed that the aim is to offer users a better, more convenient, agile and flexible service.
