New interurban bus stops will start operating in Manacor coastal areas from Wednesday, 3 June. Several measures have been in place in s’Illot, Porto Cristo, Calas de Mallorca, Cala Murada and Cala Mendia since last February. These measures form part of the regular road passenger transport service plan for the island of Mallorca (known by the abbreviation PISTRVC), whose aims include upgrading the stops.
The Consorcio de Transportes de Mallorca (CTM—Majorcan Transport Consortium) has completed works in a total of 15 locations. The current s’Illot stop in Plaza de la Savina has been replaced by two new ones in Avinguda dels Pins. The existing stop on the Son Servera road in Porto Cristo has been upgraded and a new stop has been created to replace the current one in Carrer del Mitjà de Mar. The current stops in Calas de Mallorca have been relocated to create five new ones. In Cala Murada the existing stop has been improved and three new ones created, and the current stops in Cala Mendia have also been upgraded.
Besides improving user comfort and safety, the purpose of the works has also been to ensure stops have the least impact on traffic flow in the area. The main actions performed are:
• Installing 12 new modular canopies with seating and timetable display cases.
• Improving road safety by creating two raised pedestrian crossings, installing traffic calming measures and vertical and horizontal signage.
• Expanding footways and installing paving for people with visual impairment at some stops.
The CTM, responsible for executing and financing the project, has coordinated and agreed the actions with the city council of Manacor and the main local entities in the area. The estimate for the works is €60,000 (excluding VAT).
In addition to these bus stop improvements in coastal localities, the CTM is preparing to carry out work on stops in the city of Manacor. This work has been planned for summer 2020 and it comprises the creation of an interchange stop at the windmill Molí d’en Polit, the expansion of the stop on Rambla del Rei en Jaume, and the creation of a new stop in both directions near Plaza Madrid
