The Government of the Balearic Islands has begun the first comprehensive upgrade of Palma's Intermodal Station, focused on increasing and improving accessibility, safety, and comfort for public transport users. The project is expected to be completed over the course of 2026. With a total investment of €3.6 million, the main improvements include the installation of new escalators and renovations to provide new toilet facilities, new signage, new information screens, and a new customer service office.
The Regional Minister of Housing, Territory, and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, accompanied by the Director General of Mobility, Lorena del Valle; the Manager of the Majorcan Transport Consortium, Lluïsa Serra; and the Manager of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca, José Ramón Orta, presented the improvements planned for the Intermodal Station. This is the station's first renovation in nearly 20 years, since it opened in 2007, and aims to modernise the facilities to create a more comfortable and safer space for users, focusing on three main areas: climate control, user information, and the creation of new spaces.
These actions, carried out by the Majorcan Transport Consortium (CTM) and Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM), will transform the Intermodal Station into a more modern, accessible, and safe space, in a context of continued growth in the number of public transport users. The station has seen a significant increase in users, both residents and visitors, almost tripling its numbers in six years, from 5.8 million in 2019 to the 16.5 million projected for 2025.
With these improvements, the Government aims to guarantee a fully accessible station for people with reduced mobility and other groups, as well as modernise everyday spaces—such as public toilet facilities and the customer service office—to improve comfort, safety, and aesthetics. Furthermore, to maintain station operations during the works, the project has been organised in phases.
Within the framework of the "Islands in Transformation" infrastructure plan promoted by the Balearic Government, the total investment for these projects is €3.6 million (excluding VAT), of which approximately €1 million has already been spent, with the remainder to be spent in 2026. This funding comes largely from the insularity factor of the Balearic Islands' special tax regime, and some projects are financed through the European Next Generation funds from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRF).
New escalators
In total, all ten escalators at the Intermodal Station will be renovated. Last March, the four escalators providing access to the SFM train and metro platforms were replaced; and in November, work began on installing the new escalators leading to the Intermodal Station lobby, which involved dismantling two of the four exterior escalators.
The installation of the four escalators leading to the lobby and two escalators leading to the bus bays will be carried out in two phases: three escalators will be installed in the first phase, during the first quarter of 2026; the remaining three will be installed in a second phase, during the second quarter of the year. This is the first renovation of the escalators in nearly 20 years, since their installation in 2007.
New customer service office and tactile paving
At the same time, the Customer Service Office will be transformed into a new, larger, more comfortable, and functional space, with counters adapted to different heights and improved waiting areas, with the aim of providing more personalised, faster, and accessible service. This work will be carried out during the first half of 2026.
During this phase, the tactile paving, the station's tactile floor surface specially designed to facilitate movement for people with visual impairments, will also be replaced, as will the entrance doors to the station.
New public toilets and new bicycle parking
Improvements to comfort and accessibility include the renovation and installation of new toilet facilities. The new toilets facilities will be larger and more modern, and located in a new area to improve accessibility. This work is scheduled to be carried out during the second half of 2026.
During the same period, new signage is also planned for the station to facilitate mobility, orientation, and safety for the thousands of users who pass through it daily.
The works will be carried out throughout 2026, organised in several phases to minimise the impact on the service. During the works, alternative routes, specific signage, and updated information will be provided.
New bicycle parking is also planned to promote sustainable mobility and encourage intermodality in the use of public transport. These are short-term bicycle parking facilities—for up to 72 bicycles—and their completion is expected in late 2026.
Among the improvements already made, in addition to the renovation of the four escalators providing access to the train and metro platforms, new information screens were installed in the station to improve communication for users between late 2024 and 2025; and last summer, industrial fans were installed in the TIB bus terminal to improve ventilation in the station's bus bays.
With these measures, the Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to improving Majorca's interurban public transport infrastructure with the aim of guaranteeing a high-quality, accessible, and safe service for all users.
