The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Operational Programme for the Balearic Islands 2014-2020 has defined an intervention strategy that pursues the following objectives:

  • Thematic Objective 1: Strengthening research, technological development and innovation.
  • Thematic Objective 2: Improving the use and quality of ICTs and access to ICTs
  • Thematic Objective 3: Improving the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises
  • Thematic Objective 4: Encouraging the shift to a low-carbon economy in all sectors
  • Thematic Objective 6: Protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency
  • Thematic objective 10: Investing in education, vocational training for skills acquisition and lifelong learning

Management and monitoring
The European Regional Development Funds are co-financing the project "Services and equipment for the new fare system and the management of public transport in Majorca (train, metro and bus)". The main objectives of the project are to improve the management and planning of intercity public transport as well as real-time information and user safety, and to reduce the time needed to purchase and validate tickets.
With this project, the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca is contributing to the achievement of the objectives of the ERDF OP by promoting the following actions:
Thematic Objective 2: Improving the use and quality of ICTs and access to ICTs
The main action of the co-financed project is the acquisition and upgrading of technological equipment for buses and train/metro stations, the incorporation of a fare system with new methods for paying for and validating transport tickets, and the provision of new real-time information systems. The new technological equipment will come into operation with the new regular road transport service concessions in Mallorca. The equipment will be installed in 611 buses (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera), 119 turnstiles at railway stations and 63 ticket vending machines at stations.
The total budget of the project is 6,426,000 euros. The project is financed by the Government of the Balearic Islands and 50% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. (ERDF).

Evaluation
The Cohesion Policy for the period 2014-2020 is results-oriented, with the aim of making a visible contribution to the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy. The Balearic Islands has a Special Evaluation Plan for the ERDF OP that aims to improve the design, effectiveness and impact of the programme, as well as its contribution to the Union's objectives.
